Auckland Council Lunar New Year festival director Eric Ngan says our growing pan-Asian population is an asset to Auckland. He says young Asian Kiwis are proud of their roots, enjoy life in this city, and continue to creatively evolve their traditions.
“The tradition of sharing time and food together is as strong as ever in the weeks of Lunar New Year. The metaphors that speak to the phases of the moon - change, brightness, and wholeness - are reflected in the nature of our Lunar New Year celebrations, such as family reunion dinners, striving for harmony and an aspirational future,” he says.
The Lunar New Year Festival is proudly supported by the city centre targeted rate.

He Piko He Taniwha
'He Piko He Taniwha' is a public art installation across the Freyburg Steps and facade 'drips' at Studio One Toi Tū for the duration of Pride Month.
This work explores taniwha, a being both monstrous and healing, residing in the waterways, awa and moana of this whenua, whose tail whips into our daily lives.
Kahurangiariki Smith’s whakapapa to Ngāti Rangiwewehi connects her to two taniwha, Pekehaua and Hinerua. Since living back alongside te awa o Waikato, she has been working towards articulating this daily relationship with taniwha.
Kahurangiariki continues her haerenga with taniwha as ancient kaitiaki, healers, and skux best friend in this design.
Gay & Proud Too
Gay & Proud Too – More Images and Events from the Archives of the Auckland Pride Centre 1987-2004
An exhibition of photographs from the Archives of the Auckland Pride Centre – Auckland’s Inclusive LGBTT Community Centre.
Initially started as a Gay Men's Health initiative called the Isherwood Trust in the aftermath of Gay Law Reform - The Pride Centre, as it came to be known, grew into a Community Organisation striving to serve the needs of the Auckland Queer community.
The Centre was located in a succession of locations, Federal Street, Wolfe Street, then on Ponsonby Road and Wyndham Street before arriving in Karangahape Road in 2000. As well as providing an alcohol & drug free social venue for several LGBTT community groups, an information service and lending library, it organised a wide range of LGBT events: Film Nights, Literary & Poetry Evenings, Art Exhibitions, and many public events such as Monthly Tea Dances, the Annual Coming Out Day Parade and the Auckland Gay Mardi Gras held at the Sheraton Hotel in 1990.
During the 1990s it played a significant role in promoting queer issues and questioning local Politicians on their stance towards LGBTT issues during Central and Local Elections.

Lunar New Year creative space | Drop-in workshops
Join us this Lunar New Year and celebrate the Year of the Wood Snake with a day of creativity in Te Ātea | North Atrium. Make your own snake plushie with Hanna Shim, learn how to tie lucky Chinese knots 中国结 and uncover the symbolism behind each design with Wai Ching Chan and – for those looking for a quieter moment – take a seat and write a letter, either to someone who has shaped you in the past, or to your future self.
These creative activities are inspired in part by yee sang – the colourful raw fish salad commonly served in Southeast Asia (particularly Singapore and Malaysia) as an appetiser during the Lunar New Year period. Each ingredient in yee sang symbolises different wishes for the year ahead, from abundance to luck to happiness, and is added one by one before everybody enthusiastically tosses the ingredients in the air with their chopsticks.
In a similar way, consider this an invitation to take part in the many offerings: to create something, to learn something new, to have a moment of contemplation and connection and to think about what your hopes might be for the year ahead. Join us to mark the many possibilities of this Year of the Snake!
Presented in collaboration with Satellites, an initiative connecting the past, present and future of Aotearoa Asian art.

Pride Lecture with Neke Moa
‘Through collaboration, building and maintaining relationships and a constant curiosity I am able to sustain an art practice that continues to evolve.’ – Neke Moa
Neke Moa (Te Whare a Papaīra, Ngāti Kahungunu ki Ahuriri, Kai Tahu, Ngāti Porou, Ngāti Tūwharetoa) is the 2025 senior artist for the Te Tīmatanga residency with Auckland Pride Festival.
Join us for the 2025 Pride lecture with Neke, who will speak about her practice.
Moa’s practice seeks to promote hauora (wellbeing) by deepening connections between tāngata (people), tohunga (experts) and atua (deities). Using materials from the taiao (environment) and drawing on customary and contemporary processes, she works to make mātauranga (knowledge) and pūrākau (stories) newly accessible. Her work explores our connections within the spaces of the seen and unseen, the place where wairua (spirit) resides and creativity is sourced.
She has exhibited throughout the Moana Oceania region and further afield. In 2023, she was awarded a prestigious Herbert Hofmann Prize at Munich Jewellery Week and was a McCahon House artist-in-residence. Works by Moa are held in the collections of important institutions including Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki, the Dowse Art Museum and the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa. She is based in Ōtaki Beach, where many of her rauemi (materials) are gathered.
There will be time for Q & A with Neke after the lecture led by Auckland Pride Festival Director Hāmiora Bailey (Ngāti Porou Ki Harataunga, Ngāti Huarere) and an informal cup of tea and light refreshments.
This event is part of the 2025 Auckland Pride Festival. Click on the Rainbow tag to see all our gallery Pride events or check out the full Auckland Pride Festival programme at aucklandpride.org.nz

PRIDE ART IN CONVERSATION
Celebrate two exceptional contemporary artists: Kahurangiariki Smith and Sung Hwan Bobby Park.
Kahurangiariki’s practice blends the materiality of digital media with indigenous futurism grounded in mātauranga Māori. Commissioned for Pride, her vibrant design wraps the iconic Freyberg Steps. Adjacent to this, lightboxes display Bobby’s striking photographic works. A ceramic artist with a background in industrial design, his imagery delves into identity, exploring the experiences of being queer and Asian in a heteronormative society.
Join both artists for an engaging kōrero about their newly revealed public artworks. They’ll share insights into their concepts, processes, and creative practices, exploring how their works connect under the kaupapa of Pride. An informal Q&A will offer a unique opportunity to engage with these artists, don’t miss this chance to experience thought-provoking art in the heart of the city!

BARBA ADIOS
Say ADIOS AUCKLAND, as we wrap up the weekend after Big Gay Out—join Naarm based BARBA PARTY with their sweaty beats, and techno queers. Reality may be knocking, but before you let it in, let’s make sure you’ve got one last night to send you into recovery mode for the next week. You’ve danced ‘til your feet are sore, laughed ‘til your stomach hurt, and maybe even snatched a few hearts along the way!
And let’s be honest—it’s homophobic not to take Monday off after a weekend like this. So cancel those meetings, ditch the stress, and give yourself the happy ending you earned, babe! We’re bringing the hottest local and international acts to the stage, ready to heat things up and leave you craving more.
Whether you’re losing yourself in the music on the dancefloor or making eyes with someone who might just turn into your next chaotic adventure, tonight’s about celebrating who we are—our freedom, our creativity, our unapologetic selves.

Body Story
When was the last time your body felt happy? When did it feel the most tense? How many injuries has your body sustained? Under what circumstances have you pushed it to its limits?
The successful body. The authoritarian body. The sweaty body. The becoming body. The complete body. The eternal body. The digital body. The ancestral body. The hidden body.
What does your body remember?
In this debut solo work by dance artist Xin Ji, the story of his body unravels through moments where the emotional and physical collide. Uncertainty, recklessness and euphoria slide into an intimate personal narrative — offering ways to consider our bodies as vehicles for resistance and alchemy.
Artist Bio:
From the age of eight, Xin knew he wanted to be a dancer. Fortunately, Xin was able to take dance lessons at school on Saturday mornings. At the age of 11 he auditioned for the Beijing Dance Academy and spent the next five years training in Chinese Classical Ballet.
Following graduation, Xin was offered a position in Japan with Shiki Theatre Company performing in well- known, including the role as Mr. Mistoffelees in Cats. After five years of touring, Xin wanted to develop his skills in Contemporary Dance and chose to study at UNITEC in Auckland. During this time Xin was invited to perform at The World of Wearable Art in Wellington. He was chosen to represent UNITEC in China, performing a work created by Michael Parmenter for the 60th anniversary of the Beijing Dance Academy.
After Xin graduated from UNITEC he worked with leading contemporary dance companies including Footnote, Okareka, Muscle Mouth, Movement of The Human and Borderline Arts Ensemble. Working with these leading dance companies enabled him to take part in the Wellington and Auckland Fringe Festivals, the Performance Arcade Festival, the Nelson Arts Festival, the Wellington Arts Festival and the Auckland Art Festival. Since 2015 Xin has worked with The New Zealand Dance Company with tours to Germany, Holland, France, United Kingdom,Belgium, Luxembourg and Canada.

Lights for Auckland Pride Festival 2025
Vector Lights for Auckland Pride Festival 2025
Auckland Harbour Bridge
20-28 Feb 2025
This year, takatāpui and rainbow storytelling will come to life in a dynamic light show by artist Alex Watene (Nga Puhi, Ngati Whatua, Te Arawa a Tuhoe), in collaboration with Mandylights, and will be the feature of Vector Lights for Auckland Pride Festival 2025. Vector Lights on the iconic Auckland Harbour Bridge is part of a smart energy partnership between Vector, Auckland Council and NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi. Powered by a mix of clean energy technology, the lighting display gives Aucklanders a focal point for celebration and recognition.
The lighting event will be programmed from Thursday 20 February to Friday 28 February 2025.
The dynamic light show will play every 15 minutes from 9pm until midnight. The last show playing at midnight.
Vector will livestream the first show at www.facebook.com/vectornz. The video will be archived on their Facebook page and at www.vector.co.nz/lights.
On Friday 28 February, a morning rave by Morning People will be activated with the light show at Hobsons Wharf.
Alex Watene is a Takatāpui artist and a master’s student at Unitec in Tāmaki Makaurau. His thesis research explores the intersection of whakapapa and identity through installation art, addressing themes of sexuality, identity, colonialism, kaupapa Māori, and te ao Māori. Through his work, Alex aims to foster deeper connections between these contexts and contemporary Māori art practices.
As an installation artist, Alex is drawn to large-scale public works that allow for bold, visual storytelling. Colour is a central element of his style, reflecting his vibrant and flamboyant personality. Over the years, Alex has experimented with a variety of materials, including wool, foil, straws, and boxes. In his master’s journey, he has discovered the power of integrating identity with traditional Māori art forms, bringing greater meaning and kaupapa to his artistic practice.
Having it all all all
Having it all all all is an exhibition of select video and performance art by international artists associated with the activism and identity politics of second-wave Feminism and its legacies. Featuring seminal works from the 1960s to 1990s, the exhibition brings together key figures whose work has been pivotal in a re-evaluation of female subjectivity in art.
At a time when the autonomy of women’s bodies continue to be debated and co-opted as a tool for oppressive political agendas, we hope to probe consideration into these topics through a reflection of key artists and works that contribute to a dialogue of reclamation and empowerment through an intersectional Feminist lens.
Featuring seminal works by Ana Mendieta (Cuba/USA), Howardena Pindell (USA), Pipilotti Rist (Switzerland), Martha Rosler (USA), Christa Schadt (Canada), Janice Tanaka (USA), Hannah Wilke (USA), Nil Yalter (Turkey) and more.
Accompanying the exhibition, Gus Fisher Gallery will deliver a dynamic and free public programme including bespoke performances, practical workshops and panel discussions. More details to come.

QUEER AUTUMN
Misheard Records presents QUEER AUTUMN: an alternative/queer punk gig taking place at Whammy Bar on the 22nd of February, as a part of the Auckland Pride Festival.
The leaves are turning orange, the skies are becoming greyer, but it's still Auckland Pride and shit can only get gayer. QUEER AUTUMN pays tribute to the intersections between alternative music and the rainbow/takatāpui community, bringing together a lineup of various indie rock, post-punk, emo, and alternative bands to celebrate what we've achieved and fight for what needs to change for queer and trans communities in Aotearoa.
Come out (haha) to Whammy Bar on the 22nd of February for a middle point between the fantastic queer club nights and wholesome literary workshops taking place throughout Pride Month. Have a bevvie and a mosh (or a classic Auckland slight head nod of approval) with some of the coolest new alternative acts to come out (haha) of Tāmaki Makaurau in recent years.

Mā
Mā is a poignant devised theatre and performance poetry work that delves into themes of chosen family, motherhood, and identity. This triple hander is set against the backdrop of diasporic Samoan life, the performance reflects on the intersectionality of queer identity and the nurturing essence of motherhood. "Mā" is both a tribute to the artist's own mother and a powerful expression of chosen family bonds within the queer community, embracing Aiga filifiliga (Chosen Family) as central to its narrative.
This project is a consolidative ode of affirmation to all trans fa’afafine living within the diaspora context, politics and place of Aotearoa. It highlights the relation in all our shared experiences and existences between the dualities of traditional families and chosen families, how these two structures co-exist together and from that how we foster fruitful connection between the two displayed through art.

Slutty God: A Public Theology Lecture
All are welcome to this public theology forum exploring post-heteronormative ideas. It has now been well documented that the Bible traces a move from being monaltrous (worshipping one God in a pantheon of gods) to monotheistic (there is only one real God).
This workshop explores the idea of a non-monogamous God, building on concepts of ethical non-monogamy and recent pop culture transgressions of heteronormative boundaries. Light refreshments provided. **No need to be a "theologian" or even a Christian.
We're here to facilitate conversations about the big questions in life wherever you are in your journey.** **We are an affirming group that celebrates the diversity of our whānau, whether in gender, sexuality, race, or ability.**

Waimahara | Closing Event
On March 1st the 2025 Auckland Pride Festival will close with Waimahara at Myers Park, a reimagined gathering that shifts the traditional Pride March and Pride Party to an activation that reflects on the strength within our communities and galvanises our shared vision of queer liberation and social justice.
Beginning with a rally in Aotea Square Grass Terraces, attendees will march to Myers Park through the public art installation Waimahara by Graham Tipene (Ngāti Whātua, Ngāti Kahu, Ngāti Hine, Ngāti Hauā, Ngāti Manu) for a day of connection, learning, and organising around shared advocacy goals.
Strengthening our collective response to regressive policies and rhetoric that threaten our rights has long formed Prides purpose, therefore our closing event, is our opportunity to bring communities together in a time where collective, organised actions are vital, perhaps more than ever.
More details about timings and activations will be shared in February.
Proudly supported by Auckland Council and the city centre targeted rate.
We are seeking volunteers to support key areas of Waimahara, ensuring everything runs smoothly and everyone has a safe, enjoyable experience. For more information, please click here.

Taimoana | Coastlines: Art in Aotearoa
Taking the concept of the coast, or shoreline, as a starting point, the exhibition navigates a sea of ideas, offering multiple perspectives on New Zealand art through a selection of works from the collection of Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki.
The coast is central to the way of life of many in Aotearoa New Zealand and it has been throughout our entire history. Integral to te ao Māori, the Māori world, the interconnectedness of land and sea is reflected in cultural narratives and practices. The coast is at times a source of sustenance and employment, at others a route for travel, a space of recreation, conflict, well-being or inspiration, but also, as the climate continues to change, at the frontline of danger. The coast is a threshold, an in-between zone, a perpetually shifting meeting point of land and sea that prompts us to examine our relationships with both.
In this exhibition, artists from the 18th century to today ride the oceans’ currents, traversing themes from the enormity of the Pacific to the vessels that have crossed its expanse and plied Aotearoa’s coasts, and exploring their personal responses to the shore as well as the legacies of colonial encounters and conflict.
Please note, due to the Gallery’s Heritage Restoration Project: Kia Whakahou, Kia Whakaora, this exhibition will open in stages over the next few months. The full exhibition will be open from Wednesday 18 September, 2024.

Auckland Anniversary Day Regatta 2025
The Auckland Anniversary Day Regatta celebrates the birthday of the City of Sails and the founding of the province in 1840, making it the oldest sporting event in New Zealand - even older than the America’s Cup!
The history of the Auckland Anniversary Day Regatta is tightly interwoven with that of the City of Sails itself. The very first regatta was held on the day Auckland was founded, and the event has been instrumental in developing the rich maritime history and reputation that Auckland holds today.
For spectators, it’s a glorious spectacle featuring the vintage superstars of the past and the high tech heralds of the future. The regatta attracts a huge fleet of vessels including classic tall ships and gaff riggers, modern sloops and racing keelers, sailing dinghies and foiling classes, radio controlled boats, waka ama, dragon boats and an armada of tugboats and classic launches.
For seafarers, it’s a chance to be part of history in the making - racing for over $10,000 worth of prizes and the ultimate honour of having your name engraved on one of the regatta’s historic trophy collection. The collection of over 60 trophies - many of which date back to the 1800s, and some of which are solid silver - is on permanent display at the Maritime Museum, ensuring winners will be enshrined in nautical history forever.

Leaves of Te Wānanga
Experience the beauty of Te Wānanga and its native gardens planted by Pourewa Mara and Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei. This free, drop-in activity invites families of all ages to connect with the environment, explore the cultural richness of native plants, and create a unique keepsake.
Our Te Wharekura kaimahi will guide you on a short outdoor exploration of the gardens, sharing insights into a selection of plants and trees, their traditional uses, and their te reo Māori names, including pronunciation and the origins of their meanings. Visitors will choose a favourite leaf to bring back to the activity table.
Using simple materials, you’ll create crayon rubbings of your leaf, layering shapes and colours to form beautiful designs. Cut out your best leaf shapes, thread them onto string, and craft your own delicate leaf necklace. Kaimahi will be there to assist and encourage, making the experience accessible and enjoyable for all.
Through this activity, participants will gain a deeper understanding of Te ao Māori, Te reo, native flora and their histories, all against the stunning backdrop of the Waitematā Harbour.

Jazz at the Rotunda
The Domain Rotunda hosts its annual free jazz event. This year we have the coolest new cats on the scene… as well as some names we know you'll know.
First up at the Rotunda is Lady Larisa, an international jazz and soul singer whose captivating performances have taken her from the glitz of Hollywood to the soulful blues rooms of New Orleans.
Then get ready to fall into Love Square. Featuring the talents of Nick Atkinson, Finn Scholes and Alistair Deverick, this fine trio of musicians transport you on a jazz journey from the Caribbean to the Pacific – they’ll skank, they chi-cha, they cumbia across the stage!
Headliner Taylor Griffin takes you through to the end of the show with his combo of sophisticated fun. A drummer and music producer from our own Tāmaki Makaurau, Griffin’s debut EP, In Green, co-produced and mixed by Nathan Haines, reached the top 10 in the NZ Album Charts in 2024.
