Tukutuku Toi Workshop

  • New Zealand Maritime Museum Auckland, Auckland, 1140 New Zealand (map)

Learn how to weave your own story through the art of tukutuku this Matariki in a two-hour workshop led by Awhina Murupaenga of Whatu Creative.

Tukutuku is a customary Māori artform used for storytelling. Woven panels made up of kākaho, with geometric patterns in toetoe, kiekie and pingao carry deep meaning and often tell stories of identity, family, and community. Awhina Murupaenga has created a contemporary take on the traditional craft and will teach people to weave their own story.

As part of this workshop, Awhina will present a kōrero about tukutuku and participants will receive their very own Whatu Creative Mini Tukutuku toi kit to take home.
